My grandads birth cert is only the basic one which doesn't list his parents details. I know his parents were married in Salford at St Bartholomews in 1911, but don't know the date. His mother was Alice Jones, nee Hough born 04/09/1892 and died 29/04/1974. I have found her on the census, it's just George Samuel Jones snr born 1892 that I'm struggling with! It doesn't help that I don't know any of his parents/siblings names. Thanks for all the help/suggestions so far |

So do you not have your grandads birth cert? If you do will know the maiden name of your g gran and then search for the marriage of your g grandfather and g grandmother, this will help you find them on the census and it will also give you their fathers name and occupations (hopefully) Fuzzy x have to go out now but will check back later and see how you are getting on. |

Oops - dodgy writing - the 7's look like 5's, so it's 1971 not 1951!!! |

just to clarify - I have the details for my grandad, it's my great-grandad with the same name that I'm struggling with as all I have is his death cert and the entry on my grandads marriage cert. |

The only document I have is the certified copy of an entry of death certificate which was issued 19/07/1951 and has the date and place of birth written on it. My grandfathers brother, James Arthur Jones, registered the death. My grandfather was also George Samuel Jones born 05/01/1917. I know of his last address when he died, and also know from my grandfathers marriage certificate of a previous address where he had a grocers shop. This address is the one which appears on my grandparents marriage certificate (percy st Salford). Why can't I have a nice unusual surname to trace!!?? |

Think nell has it spot on, you need to look at your fathers birth cert to get your grandmothers maiden name, then look for the marriage of your grandparents, this will give you their parents names then you can track them on the census. Fuzzy x |

Leek has its own registration district. But its possible that your grandfather wasn't born with the date you have, or that he wasn't born in Leek. What certificates do you have concerning him and what do they say? |

If you do have his death cert and it IS 1952 then you should be able to find it on the COMPLETE death index images on ancestry (not the transcribed records). But if you aren't certain, I suggest you look at your father's birth cert. This will have Grandad Jones and Mrs Jones with maiden name. You can then find their marriage which will give Granddad Jones' age and his father's name and occupation, which should make it easier to trace him on 1901 census. nell |

Hallo Jennifer I am very surprised that you have a birth date on a death cert from 1951. I understood that birthdates were only included on death certs from 1969 onwards. As to accuracy of information, the info on any certificate is only as good as a) the knowledge of the informant and b) the recording by the registrar My own grandfather's death cert - 1972, registered by my uncle - has his birthdate incorrect by a year and his birthplace as Rencome instead of Rendcomb. nell |

Hi All I've got the ominous task of tracing a Jones line (my maiden name). I've got the death cert for my g-grandad who was George Samuel Jones. According to the death cert he was born 16/04/1892 in Leek, Staffs and died 18/07/1951 in Pendleton, Salford. I have recently signed up on Ancestry and can't find any trace of him, not even his death! Can anyone shed any light or give me tips on what to do next? Is it possible that his birthplace is incorrect on the death certificate? Thanks in advance for any tips! |
