Rod Nope, mine definitely didnt bother to even pretend to be dressmakers. I forgot my Opera Singer. And Susie Cooper, the famous pottery woman, who was my father's godmother. And dont be so sure about your humble ag labs being so humble, look at mine, one minute he is digging potatoes, the next he inherited half the Turks and Caicos, at the age of 25! OC

OC, all I can say is you're lucky to be so well connected! I've got back at least 5 generations on every branch of my ancestry, and therefore know the occupations of all 16 of my ggg-grandfathers (their wives, of course, didn't have occupations!). Out of the 16, I have: 3 ag labs, 1 general lab, 3 shoemakers/cordwainers, a tailor, a grocer, a cab driver, a builder, a painter/decorator, a stone-mason, a gunsmith, a soldier and a sailor. Six of them died in workhouses and two in asylums. Not one of the 16 left a will it seems, and my father is my only ancestor who didn't have a ''blue-collar'' occupation. When I started this hobby, I was kind of hoping to find some long-forgotten link to aristocracy or at least to somebody famous, but it wasn't to be. Never mind, at least now I do know where I've come from, and I have to say that I've grown to love them all - paupers, loonies, petty criminals and just plain old battlers! Richard :)

Christine You must be unique! I did not think it was possible to have a tree without an ag lab in it. (Although admittedly one or two of mine suddenly became farmers on their children's marriage certs). Tina

Um...I suppose I ought to tell you about all the ag labs, shoemakers, cordwainers, SAWYERS (not, as I first thought, Lawyers) paupers, lunatics, criminals etc. And a vast number of VERY loose women. OC

Oh John If it were ONLY the Turks and Caicos connection, my deah! I am related to a WW2 hero of the RAF. I have an Earl, several Lords, umpteen Sirs, Knghts, Dames, Ladies and so on. My ancestors owned a third of the land in Lancashire, ok, it was rather a long time ago, but so what - they were awarded some of the land in 1179 as a result of their participation in the Crusades. I have a shed full of barmy Aristocracy, showing off and drawing attention to themselves down the centuries, including what must have been only the SECOND divorce to be granted, in 1601, when Thomas and Mary Holden had a furiously public go at each other, he calling her a gross and incontinent whore, she saying he drove her to it due to his failings in the marital bed. Their descendants fell out over the ownership of one FIELD in 1703. It dragged through the Courts for 73 years, by which time the grandchildren were dealing with it. Each had to prove their descendancy from the year 1400. The Judge accepted their pedigrees and awarded them - half the field each. I rest my (blue-blooded) case. OC

OK I have sobbed violently for many minutes, blown my nose and dried my eyes and put all that behind me and am looking bravely to the future, bleak though it will be without Ed as my kinsman. Now, about all these Mary Bells, all born in Kalangaloo... OC

This is adding up to a very impressive tree so far - anyone else? John Jackson born 1863 who knows where (certainly not Ed, apparently). Elizabeth Unknown born Devon. OC
