My great granfather was killed during ww1 here he is on CWWG Name: DINSDALE, THOMAS Initials: T Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Private Regiment/Service: South Staffordshire Regiment Unit Text: 2nd Bn. Age: 26 Date of Death: 08/01/1915 Service No: 8631 Additional information: Husband of Sarah Jane Dinsdale, of 25, Short Acre, Walsall, Staffs. Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 21 and 22. Memorial: LE TOURET MEMORIAL I found his medal card on TNA a few weeks ago thanks to someone on here, it had him as Thomas Dimsdale, I have been back to find the medal card but now I can't find anything under either of the spellings, what am I doing wrong? go to http://www.nationalarchives(.)gov(.)uk/search/quick_search.aspx?javascriptenabled=True&searchtext= remove brackets type in Thomas Dimsdale on the left under results by subject, click on all subjects. then click on Armed Service and the top one appears to be the one you are after as the service number matches with what you have found on the CWGC |

I don't know what you were doing wrong, but I found it by putting in thomas as first name, DI* for the surname, so it picked up anything starting DI..., and I put staff* in the keywords box. go to the National Archives site & put his name is as thomas Dimsdale.his medal card ref is on page 5. |

I have just used the advice in this link and managed to find the medal card for an ancestor Smith!!!!! After I got into the Smiths - there were thousands - I input his army number in the search field instead of his name and hey presto - there it was!! Thanks guys! |
