Cause of death?

I have just received my gt gt grandmothers death cert. The cause of death is given as confinement, exhaustion, certified. Is this something to do with childbirth? She was 37 the year was 1872. Thanks Karen |

From google Trade Union Reform and Employment Rights Act 1993 (c. 19)(a) in paragraph 1(4)(b) (regulations as to procedure), for the word 'confinement' there shall be substituted the word 'childbirth', ... Reg |

wow I always thought confinement was just used as a term for unwed women being sent away to have illigitimate children. Guess I was wrong. |

I have a similar one for 1876. Mine mentions 4 days labour. In my case, I found a baby daughter baptised the day that her mother died. The baby survived. Gwyn |
