Hi everyone, can anyboby advise me how to gain acess to australian cencus sites for 1841 onwards, A relative was convict and i would like to tryand find out abit more. Ta very much, Rachel xx |

Thank you Trish, St Helier means nothing to me I am only 24. my mum is a nurse but she trained in the Midlands in Leicester. Will keep plodding on with convict stuff Bye Rachel. x |

Yes the Australian census returns since federation (1901) have been destroyed. However, before that date each colony (roughly equivalent to the present-day states) conducted their own census. Some of these 19th century censuses have survived, though they are not generally available online. Rachel, I have just nudged Anthony Hull's thread AUSTRALIAN RESEARCH TIPS for you - there are lots of avenues for tracing convicts - you may even be lucky enough to be able to access a physical description of your rellie in the form of the surgeons report done on arrival in the colony.
