Rachel, I have just nudged Anthony Hull's thread AUSTRALIAN RESEARCH TIPS for you - there are lots of avenues for tracing convicts - you may even be lucky enough to be able to access a physical description of your rellie in the form of the surgeons report done on arrival in the colony. Yes the Australian census returns since federation (1901) have been destroyed. However, before that date each colony (roughly equivalent to the present-day states) conducted their own census. Some of these 19th century censuses have survived, though they are not generally available online.
