Genealogy Chat

As some of you may be aware I finally found a rellies Naturalization papers on which it also lists 6 of his children living with him at the time, he had at least 10 ,now what I need to know is I can find some of his children under his proper name and some under his new name, would it have been legal to name the children born after naturalization the new name , or would all the children have been legally allowed to use it .As I am having trouble finding some of the births and marriages for instance I have one using his new name but marrying under his old name so confusing, I have to go out today worse luck.So if I am not around will be back later thanks for any replies .

Valerie Anyone can use any name they like as long as they are not doing so for fraudulent purposes, so the answer to your question is: You will have to look under ALL versions of the name! OC

If the name has an unusual spelling, bear in mind that even registrars may have spelt it wrongly on some certs! I have a KRILOVS in my tree, but the registrar spelt it wrongly on his marriage cert, even tho he signed his name correctly. On a death cert, its upto someone else to provide the info...so sometimes mistakes are made!

My daughter who has a summer job working on the passport advice line says that as long as your ancestor had a birth certificate or other document in his old name he could still legally use it. I doubt if officials actually checked proof of identity.

I would check both surnames and the varient spellings of both.....I don't envy you that job :((( As an aside my OH agonised for ages about how to record names for his parents, siblings and himself in his tree. Father married mum and had first son. A year later mum did a 'Mrs Bucket' and had the surname changed by deed poll for dad, herself and son. OH and sister then born and registered in the new surname. Eventually he decided on BIRTH surnames as those are the ones that would show in the registers. Makes the tree look a bit strange 'tho :))) Chris

thanks for all your replies I am beginning to wish I hadnt found out about the name changes as they seem to have swapped about when it suited them.Oh well who said it was easy????And Chris thats exactly what I have done put them all down under their birth name much easier but they are the only ones on here , which is a shame as I wont get any matches.
