Mary, you are obviously far more experienced than me at this research stuff, i've only been doing this stuff for a few weeks, Reuben is listed on the 1901 census as a widow still living in Layer, Ada is listed as a lodger in the neighbouring house to him,i suppose Elizabeth could have left him to go to Oxford , i only live a couple of miles from Layer so i think i'm going to take a trip up there over the next few days to look around the graveyard and maybe check out the parish records.

Can't find a death for Elizabeth Demmond/Demmon/Demon between 1891 and 1901; there is a death for an Elizabeth Goodey of the right age, but it's in Oxford. Reuben's death's probably too recent to be on FreeBMD; you'll have to trawl the complete index on Ancestry, quarter by quarter.

Wow you guys work fast that's fantastic thankyou, i now know who Reuben married, would anyone know why he would be recorded twice under two names on the same census? Can any of you find him on the 1891 census, or a death record, i'm sure he never moved from Layer. Thankyou all so much for your help so far.xx

So Reuben was originally known as Goodey because he was born a year or so before his parents got married.

I'm searching for Reuben Demmond born in Layer de la Haye Essex, found him in 1861 census aged 6 living as Reuben Goodey with grandparents John and Ann Demmond and their daughter Emily Demmond,he is also listed as Reuben Demmond living with Joseph and Mary Ann Demmond, in the same village in the 1861 census, i believe he married Elizabeth ?in 1882 and had a daughter Ada the same year by 1901 Reuben was widowed and Ada was boarding with her dads neighbours. How can i find Reuben before 1861, and the maiden name of his wife, i also cannot find any death records for Reuben or Elizabeth.... What am i doing wrong!!!!!
