I have found my gg-grandad age 19 on the 1851 census in knutsford prison,cheshire.I was wondering if anyone could please tell me if there are any websites that would give me info what he was in for and how long.thanks peppa

He might be in the Black Sheep index (google to find it). If not, prison registers which have details of admissions, crimes, trials etc. would be in the county records office. His crime and trial would be reported in the local newspaper, so if you find out when and what he did, you can see if you can get a photocopy of any reports. If he was tried at the assizes, it would probably be reported in The Times. The Times archive is online, accessible through joining Befordshire Virtual library. nell

Assizes were a system of courts that existed until fairly recently. Basically, small cases were heard before magistrates in the quarter-sessions (met 4 x a year). More serious cases were heard by a judge & jury at various assizes which again took place at specific times. For example, my gt gt grandmother's brother was tried for murder at the winter Oxford Assizes (the crime occured in Gloucestershire).
