I think it will be much the same. I've seen an example of a website created by Family Historian and it does look a bit basic. I guess if you want a professional looking website then it will cost a lot of money.

Well good luck. I dont think FTM is the most brilliant in the world, Ive seen some lovely ones when Ive trawled perhaps yours will be more flexible.

Hi Heather, I'm planning to have my own website later this year using my Family Historian software, so that my cousins can keep up with my research. The counter is a good idea. Thank you. Rachelxx

I deliberately picked a few less common names,if you name search 'Elmer' born Norfolk on here you will find a good few in my tree, same with 'Pogson' born Horncastle. The world tree thingy is the ancestry world tree,FTM is linked to ancestry. There are some names in my tree that also link to a world tree, and a site from 2002 full of pop ups.Over 1500 families in that tree and no way of seeing where the link is to my Hay family, but no Elmer or Pogson references. Glen

I just put my name into Google & my FTM thing is the 4th on the list (with an award-winning teacher & a 16year old cheer-leader from San Antonio) BUT that's just MY ,married, name; which is no good to anyone, it's Spanish & fairly untraceable, I won't get any connections from that. Sarah :-)

Blimey, I fed in Elmer family and there are millions of them - all over the world. I didnt specifically find one that said Glen tinsel in the hit so I abandoned it. Why dont you email the techi peeps at familytreemaker and demand to know why your page isnt picked up by google search? Val, Im not sure about the credit - I think may be you are now in debt. I dont know how it happened Val, I know I just did my homepage then after a few months or something I had a mail from someone who said they had found my site very interesting and had found a connection. Not sure - perhaps you have got a password on yours, I havent. Also if you put a message on another site, like rootsweb or something add your tree url and I guess people pick that up? If you mean you want your auntie or neice or something to be able to see it you can just give them your url (if you go to your program and click on internet and then view my homepage it will go to it and your url is up in the address box. Or you can go to your homepage, click on edit and on the right hand side is a box that says something like email my mates or somesuch and you click on that and it gives you a panel to invite peeps to come and see your page and they email your mates and give them the link. I might email ftm to ask them aswell. I just looked at my home page and its gone up another 3 notches on the counter!

OK Glen, Your two made up ones gave 0 hits ! (surprised?) Jane Muir gave loads of site about a ceramics artist (mosaics) Hannah Curson gave a lot of genealogy-related hits & there were alot of William Hays: neonatal clinics, one (born 1761) in a school..... etc etc How does it work? Will wa actually get any connections from the names in the tree or is it through the site's name/title? is your site called 'tinsel knickers'? sarah :-)

Heather Report 6 Jul 2006 13:26

That was fun. Well I found me a few times. The first time I clicked and it just didnt happen. Then I found a ref to a pdf on my site clicked and yep, that came up with a tree and then I found some of the details of photos on there. Then I got bored looking for me BUT then I found a message from someone trying to contact me re my Horsteads in Norfolk. It was a few months old, but Ive just mailed them. So that was a fruitful little exercise!

Glen, What's World Family Tree? is it to do with FTM? (is it that thing that comes up every time you put a ?00th person on your tree?) Does it work like Ancestry's One World Tree (where everyone can enter & change everyone else's data??) - didn't like the idea of that when I saw that I could alter someone else's entry... Sarah :-)

I know what you mean Sarah, mine has been up and running for about 3 months, and submitted to World Family Tree for about two months now. I tried a very rare name in my tree and still nothing, trouble being if you don't have a connection to that name you would never search for it anyhow. My name brings up 50,000+ matches,i don't know about you but anything over 500 results usually gets a quick look and nothing more. The x counters e-mail does say how to improve your google and yazoo rating, but i'm not sure if i really want to go down that road just yet. I know Heather has had contact from someone via her site.Wonder how? Glen

Heather Report 6 Jul 2006 13:05

Sarah

Sarah Report 6 Jul 2006 12:58

Glen, I just tried googling a few of my names & nothing comes up either..... not sure how it works, the tree's been on there a while now (a couple of months on the FTM site) Sarah :-)
