Parish Clerks - kept in the family?

Is the Parish Clerks job (late 18th - mid 19th century) likely to be something that is usually kept in the same family?

I'm asking because I'm desperate for some sort of indication I'm looking at the right family! My ancestor & his father were both parish clerks around the 1850-1870 period. I have been trying to track this family further back & I'm having problems sorting out 2 possible candidate families for his parents. In one of these families the wife was a daughter of the then parish clerk. Is this the sort of tenuous link that helps me decide its the right family, or am I clutching at straws?
