Non Conformist church question

Hope someone can help with this query... I've not been researching my family tree for very long and have just come across my first non C of E marriage cert. On the cert it states that the people concerned were married 'according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Independents' (sic) Would this have been a generic term for any non C of E/Catholic marriage or was there an 'Independent Church'? As background the marriage took place at Orsett Chapel, Essex in 1849

Paul, This was another name for The Congregational Church, now known as The United Reformed Church. Hope this helps you. Jennifer

Thanks Jennifer, that makes perfect sense as there is a congregational church referred to in the village.
