Paul, This was another name for The Congregational Church, now known as The United Reformed Church. Hope this helps you. Jennifer |

Hope someone can help with this query... I've not been researching my family tree for very long and have just come across my first non C of E marriage cert. On the cert it states that the people concerned were married 'according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Independents' (sic) Would this have been a generic term for any non C of E/Catholic marriage or was there an 'Independent Church'? As background the marriage took place at Orsett Chapel, Essex in 1849 |
