My great-grandfather John Royal Clark was an optician in the Islington/Clerkenwell area of London. There presumably weren't many opticians around then, but nevertheless he lived in a very poor part of Islington. Is there a guild or a trade register where I might find something about him or how opticians plied their trade in those days?
