Bastardy bonds or custard creams? Elaine seriously, bastardy bonds were the forerunner of today's Child Support Agency, except more effective. When a poor misled girl/immoral slut got pregnant, the parish elders/noseyparker busybodies would try to find out the name of the father to get him to accept his parental responsibilities/shove the maintenance of his brat onto him to avoid incurring parish expenditure/being seen to support filth and vice. Apparently the midwife would sometimes be recruited to ask the poor girl in between contractions 'Who've you had it away with then?' Bastardy bonds would be drawn up with the amount payable and they are in county records offices - EXCEPT the ones relevant to my illegitimate gt grandmother, which haven't survived, so I have a blank space for one of my gt gt grandfathers which may never be filled:-( I know that in 1862 a woman in Gloucestershire received 1s. 6d a week, which the local police superintendant collected for her. nell

Time for beddybyboes! Bill is Bill and Ben is Ben. Simple, really. I think they are probably going to go for one of those civil partnership whatsits. I was always suspicious about Andy Pandy and Teddy getting into that hamper together too. Nightnight JessnElainenPhoenixnAnnnOldeCrone! nell

You have told me to look for them before, but I don't know who they are!!! Merry I was joking - everyone's looked. I'm only interested because I don't know, they aren't direct line or anything. But anyway, in case someone else reads this and could do with a challenge GEORGE Broad b. 1856 in St Mawgan, Cornwall Birth ref: 1856 Mar St Columb 5c p.128 1861 Whitewater, St Mawgan with family 1871 indoor farm servant for Peter Cock 1881 age 25, gardener, at the Taff Vale Inn, Cowbridge, Glamorgan, Wales No trace after 1881. not mentioned in eldest sister Mary's estate which was divided equally amongst her surviving siblings. JAMES Broad born 1859 St Mawgan 1858 Sep St Columb 1861 Whitewater St Mawgan with family 1871 indoor servant of Stephen Vivian, St Mawgan, age 11 not found in censuses after this, but is mentioned as Jas. Broad, a legatee of his sister Mary's estate in 1925. St Mawgan is sometimes recorded as Mawgan or Mawgan in Pydar or St Mawgan in Pydar, and sometimes other members of the family put St Columb Major instead of Mawgan. Best of British! At least it will stop you killing your family. nell

Phoenix

Phoenix Report 18 Feb 2006 16:47

Hi Nell Was your legatee given an address as well as a name? As they were living on the tip of England, was it possible that they went to Canada , or South America, or USA or South Africa or Australia or.... A large chunk of my Edwards family (from Devon) went to Canada in dribs and drabs from the 1870s onwards and thanks to the wonderful Ian, I've found another chunk in Australia.

Hallo Phoenix. Unfortunately Mary Broad died without leaving a Will, and what I have is a sheet of paper showing her assets and their equal division between her surviving siblings and my grandmother, daughter of Mary's dead sister Emma. No addresses, and only lists my grandmother as Mrs. G. Williams. I wouldn't know who she was if I didn't already know, if you see what I mean! I have wondered about James and George being sailors or emigrating, but have no family knowledge of this and no idea where to start really. They may have joined the army but again, where would I look. I've done a search on their names on Nat Archives and a2a without success. nell
