Oops forgot to say she was married, not widowed in 1881!! Sorry!! Merry

Merry

Merry Report 10 Feb 2006 19:35

It's a good job they had the Miles inlaws living with them in 1901, as otherwise they would have been a mystery for ever! I really do think the Richard and Eliza are the right parents. Those places, Hoe-thingy and Wel-thingy are very small and to have two Alfred's, with the right dad's name born at the same time, but only one on each census seems too unlikely to accept!! Merry

Karen

Karen Report 10 Feb 2006 19:31

I think I have madea breakthrough!! Richard was still alive in 1881 - was in the newbury union workhouse on the census, listed as a pauper!! This is starting to fit together a bit more now.

Karen

Karen Report 10 Feb 2006 19:26

Didnt they realise when they were filling in the census returns 140 years ago, that I would be looking for them! LOL Why cant people use the same name all the way through life, and not keeping chopping and changing with middle names. This is so difficult - my brain hurts!

Merry

Merry Report 10 Feb 2006 19:10

if they married in Church there's a great likelyhood the vicar didn't ask!! I have about 10 certs where father was dead but not mentioned as such and three where he was listed as dead but wasn't!! Merry

Karen Report 10 Feb 2006 19:06

I am not too sure about the COX / COCKS families - on other marriage certificates that I have, if the father is deceased, they are listed as such on the cert. Not ruling it out though. Need all the help and options I can get!

WOW!!!! I have just come in from work, and was about to tel you that she was listed as MILLS, not MILES on 1881, and see that I need to study this and catch up. Witnesses at their wedding were: Charles Munday and Caroline Whiting. Married 2nd October 1897 Parish Church, Hungerford. Alfred listed as living at Salisbury Row (?), Hungerford, and Mary Switham (?) Breach, Hungerford. - Sorry the handwriting is a little dubious. Both fathers were Farm Labourers. Found Daisys birth cert out too - born 29th May 1904 at 4 Brighton Road. Parents Alfred John Cox and Mary Ann, formerly Miles. Alfred is A Tractor Engine Driver by this time.

I think you're right, Merry :) They're down as Mills in 1881. She is Gertrude Mary or Mary Gertrude I think.
