They used to be held at the National Archives at Kew so I'd start there. If you go onto their webstite they probably have research guides for mariners Zoe

Andrea You'd need to look up his seamans ticket from which you coould trace all his ships. So far all my mariners have been pre1837 (before they had tickets) so I dont know a huge amount about it other than they had to have one to work on board. Zoe

My ggreatgrandfather was a master mariner he lived in Liverpool his name was Samuel Scott Arthur i cant find him on any census, he was proberly at sea, is there any way i could find out what ship he was on?
