My wife has an ancestor who was in Preston Prison at the time of the 1881 census. I wish she had told me her history before I married her! Anyway, does anyone know how I can find out for what offence he was in prison ? Also, his wife does not show anywhere on the 1881 census, though appears before it and again in 1901. I am guessing she may have been in Ireland at the time, but does anyone have other thoughts ? Thanks Graeme |

Somewhere there should be an admissions register (Prison Calendar?) where it will all be recorded. The local records office would be the place to enquire. |
