I have a rellie on 1891 census for occupation it has N....S On his daughters marriage cert in 1891 his occupation is Smith. Any ideas what the census occupation stands for? Dawn

If he is a Smith he would have had an apprenticeship so would have remained one all his life. I would think then that the S would stand for Smith - now we need to work on the 'N'. Are you sure its not a 'W' as that would be white smith.

N S could mean Not Stated, meaning he never filled in that part of the census schedule. Crista

Thanks all He was a male it wasn't an image of it I looked at but from the cornwall census list and after trawling through all the names could of misread it as N instead of W will go back and check.Did have wife as scolar so could of been ;isted wrong. Thanks again Dawn

I've also always assumed that NS stood for Not Stated on any of my family records. It certainly stands for that nowasays. Sue G

Thanks Laird Just found the image for 1871 and hes a blacksmith. Dawn
