I thought it might be a good idea to list websites and other resources people have found useful in researching families from Co Durham. For a start there's www dot jarrowonline dot com Hope others have more to add Jan

Nuther three http://www(.)redmire(.)net/lookup/dur.html Its a volunteer service to do lookups for Durham. There is a similar one for Northumberland. If your relatives come from a coal mining background, try this one http://www(.)dmm(.)org(.)uk Its the site for Durham Mining Museum. Loads and loads of information. I find this particular site helpful http://genforum(.)genealogy(.)com(/)englandcountry(/)durham

A Durham specific board can be found at www(.)rootsweb(.)com/~engdur Also this one about waggonways through the North East.. www(.)geocities(.)com/waggonways If anyone has an interest in Workhouses or PoorHouses, I found this site very interesting - though not Durham specific, they do cover Durham. http://users(.)ox(.)ac(.)uk/~peter/workhouse/index(.)html As mentioned, Durham Records Online is very good, and they have a lot of stuff you can read about for free. I agree with Wendy about the DurhamRecords site - it has some 1851 and 1861 census information which I have found useful. A bit pricey but worth it.
