Prison Records in late 19th Century

Having discovered that my 2xGt.Grandfather was in prison on 1871 census in Gillingham, Kent, could anyone tell me how to find out more. Thanks Marjorie

if you google ,prison inmates during the 19th century in Kent online there are quite a few sites

Contact one of the Kent archive/record offices - whichever is nearest the prison, and see if they have the prison register. I found several of my relatives in the Gloucester gaol register, the index to which is online via the Records Office. It gave the date they were imprisoned, why, a physical description - quite detailed - and the results of the trials. nell
