Several of my women ancestors were strawplaiters. (the men were in agriculture) Does anyone know anything about this occupation? Thankyou Norma

Some of my ladies were straw plaiters. They lived in Luton, Beds. It was home work, which they fitted in amongst the scrubbing, washing, ironing, cooking and childcare, for pennies a day towards the family budget. Their work was used in the production of straw boaters and other hats. dave

The women would have been plaiting straw to be made into straw hats.

Yes, I too have lots of strawplaiters from Bedfordshire. I have an old postcard which shows an old lady sitting plaiting outside a thatched cottage. It is titled 'Strawplaiting in Bedfordshire'. Hmmm - a little TOO picturesque I think!! Anne

Hi my husbands family from Wethersfield Essex have a lot of strawplaiters, I was told once that they could earn more money than some of the men working on the land. Margaret
