ive been on 1837 online and found my grandmother but only her mothers maiden name is shown. i've been told that only the fathers name is on the birth certificate, so how would i find out her first name? |

Mother's name always appears (unless the child is a foundling I suppose), but criteria for father's name is the same as today - only if married or attending the registrar's office with the mother. Most illegitimate births do not show a father's name, unlike today. The mother's name will show as 'Ann Smith formerly Jones' if she is married, or just as 'Ann Jones' if she is not. Hope this helps.
