married or maiden name???

when people eneter a wife/ mother etc do you put her as the married or maiden name?? i can see advantages of both... i cant find a way of putting the other name in.... what do you people do???? please help, im a neewbie!!!!

You should always put everyone under the name they were born with - then you can add spouses or put name changes in later. Well, that's what the books tell you anyway and that's what I do!!! Maz. XX

Definitely maiden name. If you don't know it yet, mark it as unknown until you find out! The married name becomes obvious when you add the marriage. Carole

Maiden, always. Uusally programmes will display 'Mary Smith born 1850'. This implies that Smith was the surname at birth. When you search for a birth record you don't usually look under the married name.
