Have just discovered that my ggg aunt Ann Sheppard married a bit of a rotter in Kings Lynn in 1838. In 1840 he was tried and transported to Tasmania for forgery using his father-in-law's name (and he continued his life of crime whilst there, too!). He eventually remarried in Tasmania in 1852. I have looked for a death for Ann in her married name of Winkfield and her maiden name with no luck. Was divorce possible at that time? If so does anyone know how I could find divorce records? |

They may not have divorced, apparently it was common for people sent to Australia to marryagain once they were out there, regardless of their marital status back home!!! I suppose they thought they were so far away that noone would know!!! |

I have an 1846 Divorce which I found on line at the PRO, although the only details (on line) are who filed for divorce. Sheila |

You could have a look or write to the local records office. I've got one from Gloucester Records Office for 1840. |

Thanks for all the input. Divorce is beginning to sound unlikely; there is a marriage on Freebmd for an Ann Winkfield in 1844..but it's a bit of a long shot to send for the certificate as there were a lot of Winkfields in Norfolk. However she would be keen to get rid of her husband's surname, I guess..... |
