Thanks for all the input. Divorce is beginning to sound unlikely; there is a marriage on Freebmd for an Ann Winkfield in 1844..but it's a bit of a long shot to send for the certificate as there were a lot of Winkfields in Norfolk. However she would be keen to get rid of her husband's surname, I guess.....

You could have a look or write to the local records office. I've got one from Gloucester Records Office for 1840.

I have an 1846 Divorce which I found on line at the PRO, although the only details (on line) are who filed for divorce. Sheila

They may not have divorced, apparently it was common for people sent to Australia to marryagain once they were out there, regardless of their marital status back home!!! I suppose they thought they were so far away that noone would know!!!

Have just discovered that my ggg aunt Ann Sheppard married a bit of a rotter in Kings Lynn in 1838. In 1840 he was tried and transported to Tasmania for forgery using his father-in-law's name (and he continued his life of crime whilst there, too!). He eventually remarried in Tasmania in 1852. I have looked for a death for Ann in her married name of Winkfield and her maiden name with no luck. Was divorce possible at that time? If so does anyone know how I could find divorce records?
