I am wanting to find a marriage between a Joseph France and an Ellen (no surname known). If I find a marriage for Joseph France which I think may be correct, how can I double check that he married an Ellen before ordering the certificate?

At some point they started including the spouse's surname but that might be quite late on. Have you tried freebmd? Also check whether the area in question has any info on-line.

Russell If you find the marriage on FreeBMD or Ancestry's England & Wales civil registration index (which is the same info as FreeBMD) you can click on the page number to see if there is an Ellen on the same page. Helen

Thanks Helen, but it has not been transcribed yet. Looks like I will have to take the plunge and order the certificate :-(
