Fascinating. It's quite amazing how the fortunes of parts of London have changed for better or worse. Thanks for drawing my attention to this site. Barbara

how strange! i was looking at that site yesterday. i came across whilst searching for the street in Shoreditch that my great grandfather was born in. the street no longer exists but i found it on there with the comparison map. very good site.

Thanks for this tip ! I've just been looking up where my family come from in Lambeth, complete with comparison maps 1898/2000. it's great !

I will check it out - I am Surrey born and have just discovered that my maternal great-grandparents are from St. Pancras. I know what the areas are like now, but it will be interesting to see what they were like back in their day.

This site will give you the categories of wealth of the residents in London/Surrey streets, Charles Booth did the mapping and went around with the police on their beat, he gives a great insight into the housing and lowdown on the behaviour of the residents. There are digitised pages of the police books, maps colour coded according to wealth. It is a very interesting site. Go to http://booth[.]lse[.]ac[.]uk/ and click on the part you wish to view. You can type in your street in a search facility available on the police books section and it will give you all the mentions of that street and the page numbers.
