I am looking for an Aunt who I believe was adopted in the mid/late 1900s. Have absolutely no idea where to start searching, any advice? Gill |

I don't think "adoptions " were officially recorded in Britain till the 1920s . It usually consisted of a neighbour or family member taking the child in and just using their surname instead. Often the surname would be the same if child was adopted by grandparents etc.You could try searching the institutions in the area on the 1901 census but it could get expensive. KIM |
