1881 census problems

I have found the right family on the 1881 census but my Thomas has turned into a Francis. He is the same age but I can't find any Francis in the birth registers. Is it possible the name was entered wrongly? Has anyone else found this sort of mistake before? Sue

Yes my grandmother was down as Janey when her name was Irene

Yes, several of my lot were known as something different from their registered name. Maybe Thomas/Francis' Dad registered his favourite name but mum's choice was the one the child was known by, or perhaps little Thomas just looked more like a Francis when he started to grow up.
