When adding to Tree you have to put an apprximate age.. So if I have a child born in say 1820 and I only know his fathers name - what year would I put for an approx. dob for his father ? Sue |

Hi Sue I think when you enter the year of birth, just below is a box that you click on and it comes up as a tick. And then when the year is actualy shown in your tree it will say c1820 which I think means Circa. Debbie |

Lisa There is nothing more annoying than finding a name but the age is 0, you may as well take a guess otherwise its just so frustrating ive never had to do that. like you I guess about 10 years and put the c what is so hard about that. Debbie |

Lisa I shouldnt have wrote what I did, I am so sorry I just came back to delete it, I suppose I was annoyed about something else. Please accept my apology and put what you like in your tree and ignore stupid people like me. Debbie |

I always put 20-25 years too and tick the circa box. Naomi |

I suppose 20-25 might be their age when the first child was born, but usually they were at it for 20 years after that. |

True, I have a family where the eldest daughter is 21 and youngest is 1 month on the 1891 census. The Mum is only 42. Naomi |

Thanks everyone - I thought about 20yrs should do it, I just wanted to know if there was any protocol involved with this sort of thing. I agree it is annoying to find 0 by someones name it gives no clue at all. Also place of birth - at least take a guess - I usually put the same birthplace as the first child for a parent but if i don't know for sure add square brackets[ ] round it. I think I read somewhre that that was the way to do it. Sue. |

I usually take 20 years off the youngest child, or 25 years if I don't know where the child appears in the list. |

I dont usually have a problem with guesstimated ages, but what DOES annoy me is missing places of birth....if you are not sure just put uk, or whatever country. I recently contacted a person with a name in my tree....totally useless.....the reply was " born in the states"...why couldnt he have put that in the first place? Bob |
