Does anyone know if birth, marriages and deaths are recorded and if so for how long?

Helena, You have to apply through the South African Embassy closest to you. To the Department of Home Affairs. Alternatively, you can try contacting online throught the email address I have already given you. It is a catch 22 situation as the information that you require, you have to supply the details of which you wanted in the first place. i.e. I can get a copy of my birth cetificate because I know where my birth was registered, full names of parents, dates of birth etc. etc. I cannot get a copy of my Mother's because of insufficient details of her parents.
