Ancestry Free Trial - How secure is web site

When handing over my credit card details I have always been told that if there is no little padlock in the right hand corner then the web site is not secure. Ancestry co uk is offering a free trial which I want to take up but when filling in the details I have noticed that there is no little padlock in the corner. Am I OK to give my details or am I just flapping over nothing? I have been to Ancestry com and there is not padlock on their site either. Any advise? Karen

Karen I am no expert, but I have had no problems with my free trial and subscription with Ancestry. I travel quite a bit and give my CC numbers all over the world, and don't want to tempt fate, have had no problems. Once when I was asked to give a CC number over the web for a taxi to collect me in Rome, I was a bit bothered about doing it, so I rang the CC company and they said If I gave the number and there was a problem they would sort it out and I wouldn't have to pay, booked the taxi no problem. I am not one of lifes worriers, and I assume things will be O.K unless proven otherwise, but I am always cautious. If you have worries phone your bank/CC company and see if they can put your mind at rest. Hope this helps a bit. Lynda

Thanks for your reply Lynda. Hubby has a card that he only uses once in a while and a very low spending limit so I think I will give it a go. Karen

Karen At least if you use a card that is little used you can keep a close eye on it's activities. I'm sure it will be O.K. Hope you find loads of people on there. I use it lots and find it a big help, with the parish records and everything else it has. Good Luck Lynda

Hi Karen, I have had two 3 month subscriptions and am very happy with Ancestry. The only problem I had recently was when I mislaid my username and password. I emailed them twice using the correct path but didn't get a reply. When I tried an alternative route they promptly wrote back and told me this route was not acceptable! Eventually I phoned them (in Utah) and after waiting for 30 minutes for an assistant, everything was sorted and I got an extra month added to my suscription as compensation for the aggro. Just don't lose your password and username if you subscribe else you'll have a huge phone bill! Aileenx

Aileen I wonder if that was just a blip, as I forgot my passsword, seem to have so many for different things, but they emailed me straightaway. But as you say best to keep it written somewhere. Lynda

Hi Ladies Thank you for all your help and advise. I am going to give it a go with a card that is only used occasionally so can keep track. Karen
