I am loking for info on Alfred Johnson[butcher]and his wife Eliza, both born 1855ish in Yarmouth. Children are Alfred,Catherine,Edith,Herbert,Maud,Percy, and Robert. Other addresses I have for them around that time are in Clapham and Chelsea,so I think they would be in Middlesex/Surrey. Thanks for any help.

Janet Report 12 Sep 2003 16:29

I'll go and see if I can find them. Jan.

Hi,Jan thanks for that, however I don't think this is them as I am sure they were still in the Middlesex/Surrey area then. Thank you anyway.

Janet Report 12 Sep 2003 16:43

I put in Alfred Johnson, born in Gt.Yarmouth, and only three came up - the other two were totally wrong. With the fact that this one has the name Alfred, is a Butcher, and his wife has the name Eliza, I would seriously consider this as a possibility. Second names often became first names. Do you have dates for when the children were born? Jan.

Janet Report 12 Sep 2003 16:53

I tried both Alfred and Eliza in both Chelsea and Clapham, but didn't find anything useful. Perhaps someone else would like to try? Jan.

Alfred b.1874,yarmouth,Catherine,1877,balham or hampsted,Robert,1879,balham,Maud,1882,balham,Edith,1884,balham,Percy,1886,balham,Herbert,1888,Balham. There was a younger child,Stanley born in Woodgreen, but that wasn't until 1892. Many thanks for your help.

They were certainly busy, weren't they? I'll go see if I can find anything from the children's names. Back soon. Jan.

Well, there were no genealogy sites to keep them occupied! Thanks again

BINGO! A result, and a puzzle. 5 Commerce Road, Tottenham Alfred Johnson, 36, Ham & Beef Shop, born STEPNEY. Eliza Johnson, Wife, 36, born Norfolk. Robert son 12 Balham Maud daughter 8 Edith daughter 6 Percy son 4 Alfred son 16 Clerk Balham Herbert son 2 Balham I've listed them in the order they were in the census - but when I tried to double check by doing a search for Alfred Johnson it came up zero. I then did a search for Johnson, Male, RG12/1080, Folio 70, Page 29, and it listed all but Alfred Junior. So I don't know quite who he is or what his surname was, but in the census it had ditto marks under Johnson, like all the other children. I'd be interested to know, if you ever find out. Jan.

Hi,Jan,Thank you so much for that! How strange though,i'm sure that Alfred junior was born a while after they were married, and given his first name one would assume he was legit. Once again, thank you very much, sorry it wasn't easier!

Janet Report 12 Sep 2003 17:22

If it had been easier, it wouldn't have been so much fun! Just realised I missed Catherine, I'll go and see if I can find her. Jan.

They married in the June 1/4 of 1874,so it may have been a close thing! But then if he had her maiden name [Fletcher] surely it would have said.

Janet Report 12 Sep 2003 17:36

I think I've found her - 20 Harmood Street, Kentish Town Samuel Fletcher 52 Weigh Bridge Clerk, born Yarmouth Sarah (Wife) 56, born Norfolk Alice (Daughter) 17 School Teacher, born Middx Charles (Son) 15 or 16 not clear, Contractors Clerk, born Middx Catharine Johnson, Visitor, 14, born Middx. John Clark, Boarder 24 James Tobin, Boarder, 23. She was the only one shows as other than Daughter for 13, 14 and 15 year olds. And the fact that Samuel & Sarah Fletcher came from Yarmouth and Norfolk is interesting, perhaps an uncle & aunt? Thanks for giving me something interesting to do when I've hit a brick wall with my own researches. Jan.

Janet Report 12 Sep 2003 17:48

Goodness. Thank you Sarah, I was sure I'd checked place of birth right across the sheet too. Just shows how you need to double check everything. Sorry Diane, might have wasted you a lot of time and money there. Jan.
