I have found a death record for someone who could have been my great grandfather's brother, who was Herbert Cleaver and he emigrated to Canada in 1911. The death record was for a Herbert R Cleaver died 1980 and states place of death as Orange, Florida, and gives date of birth as 1893 which was the same year as Herbert in my tree. What would be the best way to find out of this was the same Herbert Cleaver?

Do you have the exact birth date of your Herbert? The SSDI gives birthdate as 21 June 1893.

Course, you know what I'm going to say, Angela! You've got to buy that certificate to get the exact birthdate to see if it matches the one who died in Florida. And you're going to say, but it's not my direct ancestor, I can't afford any more certificates! Just your luck that he must have come to Canada after the 1911 census. That gives month of birth.
How about asking for a look-up on the American censuses? I'm trying to remember if they give birthdates. Of course you won't know when he went to America. I'm thinking out loud here, can you tell?

Hi Angela
If you have any idea of when he went to Canada why don't you post a polite request asking if anyone can do a lookup for you? People tend to be very generous with their time and subscription fees on this board. They may be able to find his date of birth and who he travelled with and a home address in the UK from the documents. The immigration records may also tell you his height, hair colour, etc.
Good luck
Paul

Thanks guys.

I had already known who he married, and when he travelled to Canada. I am going to be writting to some Cleaver's in Toronto who could be descendents of Herbert and Amy. Hopefully, if they were relatives of Herbert, they might be willing toshare some info with me. As for purchasing birth certificates, at the mo I am double skint and can't spend any more money, yet!

If he does turn out to be the Herbert Cleaver registered in Blean and living in Marshside in 1901 - let me know if you want a picture of the Gate Inn at Marshside - we pop out there on a fairly regular basis.

Marshside is still a small place!

I didn't see his name here, but my great-uncle's name isn't listed either.
