I HAVE JUST SPENT TWO NIGHTS IN HOSPITAL, NOT THE NORMAL I ATTEND I HASTEN TO ADD.
ON THE WAY HOME, I WAS FEELING VERY WARM, THUMPING HEADACHE, AND BLURRED VISION.
GUESS WHAT? I GET HOME AND LATER DISCOVER I HAVE BEEEN OVERDOSED ON A CONTROLLED DRUG.
INSTEAD OF HAVING A TOTAL OF 40MG BETWEEN YESTERDAY MORNING AND THIS MORNING, I HAVE BEEN GIVEN 110MG.
SPENT OVER HALF AN HOUR SPEAKING TO NHS24 AND HAVE TO WATCH WHAT I AM DOING AS I AIN'T OUT OF THE DANGER PERIOD AS YET.
I'VE GOT MY 9YR GRANDSON STAYING, AND HAVE HAD TO TELL HIM WHAT TO DO IF I FALL ASLEEP AND HE CAN'T WAKEN ME, OR IF I AM SICK OR IF MY HEADACHE DON'T BUDGE AND I BEGIN TO FEEL UNWELL.
RANG THE WARD I WAS IN, AND THE NURSE SAID SHE CAN'T CONFIRM WHO THE DOCTOR WAS WHO ADMITTED ME, OR THE DOCTOR WHO SIGNED MY DISCHARGE PAPERS.
SMELLING A RAT, AS THEY HAVE MADE ANOTHER MISTAKE PERTAINING TO MEDICATION.A SENIOR MEMBER OF THE MEDICAL STAFF IS SUPPOSED TO BE GOING TO CALL ME BACK, BUT I AIN'T HOLDING MY BREATH.

OMG Vicky, make sure someone's head goes on the chopping block for this, It could of been quite nasty if you hadn't realised things were not right.

Hi
All controlled drugs have to be entered in the Controlled drug register for that ward. They have to have 2 signatures in the register for that dose. It is also initialled by the nurse who administered it. The Pharmacy dispenses the drugs ordered and they are checked by 2 nurses and signed into the register. No one can hide anything the law is VERY strict on controlled drugs. I think they are probably running around like crazy now checking everything.

Hope you are feeling better soon but phone someone immediatley if you are at all worried.

NHS24 pharmacist said I did the right thing by contacting them as soon as I had realised the mistake. When I rang the ward back to see if they could give me the name of the doc who admitted me, the nurse said, 'I couldn't really say' to which I replied 'That's right, you cover your back as well' and put the phone down. Wait and see how long it taked them to call me back.

vicky, isn't that awful. You make sure somebody admits to this. The very least you want is an apology. Threaten them with the local paper as soon as you feel well enough.

Please check in regularly as we are all concerned.

Vicky

You have been through plenty already without having to deal with incompetence like this. You MUST get someone round to sit with you, I am pretty sure whoever you ask will not find it any trouble at all. if it was asked of me by a friend I would be there in no time at all. Better that than something happen to you on your own. What better companion than a retired nurse, who will know what signs to look out for before you may start getting drowsy.

Poor you, you haven't had the best of medical experiences have you?

Sending my best wishes to you,
Lyn x x x

Thanks all. The drug is Oxycontin, which is a slow release pain killer, which releases over 12hrs, so I'm not allowed to take tonights dose, or my sleeping tablet. Just allowed Paracetamol for my headache.

Thinking of writing a book on the NHS lol
Can't fault the hospital I usually attend, but for 3 signatures to be on a discharge letter, and for a mistake on the amount of dosage of one drug which was administered at 10mg dosage twice, to equal 200mg, is just not on.

Will just try to keep moving about, and will pop on from time to time to keep you posted.
