Jackie from Wales

Keep your chin up, my mother was 84 when she had a hip replacement and she had an epidural and was absolutely fine. No need these days for a full anaesthetic!! Hope your dad is okay

All best wishes for you and your dad. You are never dead until you stop breathing, and these days not always then! The old have seen it all and are very resilient.

Sorry I haven't come back to you earlier, went to bed to try and get some sleep...didn't work!!!

They decided to go ahead with the surgery, he will be in intensive care afterwards...so now I am just sitting by the phone.....and waiting.

He's been in surgery for almost 5 hours now.

Hi Girl from Oz, no news is good news so try not to worry and hopefully your Dad will be up and about again in the next few weeks, with medication to sort his heart problem out too. Just the right time for recuperation with summer coming for you if he is in your neck of the woods.
Am sending lots of positive thoughts to you both

If he is happy to have the operation, then let him go for it. He must have the right attitude........Although 80 is a fair age for an op, I'm sure the doctors would refuse to do it if they thought he wouldn't come through it. Think of the Queen Mother!

Let us know how he gets on, will you? Wishing you both all the best.

Hi girlfromoz, just adding my hugs to those from my friends suemaid, berona, carolee from one board and purple sparkly from another.
A hip replacement is a BIG operation, but if the doctors think his heart can cope it would be nice to see him getting around more comfortably in the future.
Best wishes to you and your dad, Colin in Sydney.

Hi all, and again thank you to everyone for your replies and good wishes I am overwelmed by your responses.

Dad is out of surgery and now in ICU. Spoke to him not long ago, and although a bit groggy...sounds ok.

My prayers have been answered.... or maybe is it his strong scottish ancestry that has pulled him through!!!

Feeling so lost for words.....

I had a full hip replacement 18 months ago. This was done with an epidural and sedation (I didn't want to know what was going on) I was fine and now walk, run and dance without any problems.

There are others ways to have this operation other than anesthetic which are very successful. The most important thing is to do the exercises and physio afterwards.

Love to you and all the luck in the world to your dad
