I've also always liked the idea of a warning system, and am going to use as an example (yet again - I apologise!) the Internet Movie Database. As I understand it, when you start posting on the message boards there you are subject to a 2 minute posting quota thing where you can write a reply as soon as you like after adding an earlier post but have to wait till the 2 minutes is up before you can submit your next one. If, over time, the user demonstrates that they are using the site properly (ie. no abuse reports are received about them) the time limit is reduced to 90 seconds but if the user is reported a lot, 30 seconds is added to their posting quota. (I believe there are instances where site users there who don't "behave" have to wait up to 10 minutes to repost and I think a default time limit between posts might halt some arguments as people would have time to read over their writing before it could be added to a thread.)

I also think there should be set rules for the admin staff to follow when deciding whether a post is abusive or not, as somebody suggested above me. It does seem a bit arbitrary sometimes - hence instances of threads disappearing just because one posting has been reported. If we had an outside admin person who read the boards, they could post a kind of "official warning" on threads that are getting too argumentative requesting that posters calm down and if they don't, then the thread could be wiped rather than it just disappearing into thin air.

well personally I LIKE it when a thread is turned silly, but thats just me epecially when its an argument thread, humour is far better than snidy remarks, and bikering,

or thats what i think anyways if people dont like what there reading tey could always start there own threads, on subects they wana talk about x

I dont' see justgenealogy joining in the other actual debate threads on here tonight....where there is no 'silly' or 'rude' chatting going on....

Sorry, but sometimes, it happens. Have you ever sat in the same room with people for an evening and discussed all so seriously one single subject, or do people digress.

Thats all that happened here, and there's no harm done by it is there?

If thats all it takes to be offended, then maybe you shouldn't be on chat forums anyway. Just my opinion.

Joy, you can have as many as you like, my dear, as long as they are not 'silly'. XX BC (Old Member)

My take on it is that as long as they are being friendly and behaving within the t and c's then why on earth would it matter on a board called *chat*.

But then that's just me x

What was that earlier wish about bringing back the fun threads?

tsk

Is it even worth trying to have a laugh on here sometimes?

Hi, sorry if I am out of order, but I cannot understand why, when a new post is started on a certain subject, that it goes into a 'Silly mode' and the same old members just take over the thread and change the subject completly, and start posting daft things.

It really does seem that there are a dozen or so members that seem to take over any thread posted. Sometimes very rudely, posting and Interupting a serious thread.

Muffyxx

Muffyxx Report 20 Mar 2010 23:29

You can debate peoples opinions if you like..though it wasn't intended as a debate thread...but if you want to debate it's up to you....however in answer to YOUR question...yes in essence it was a serious thread.

TeresaW Report 20 Mar 2010 23:28

It is JG, but its also a CHAT board, so sometimes just chatting gets in the way.

Justine

Justine Report 20 Mar 2010 23:25

So, was this a serious thread or what? No debates, no anything. ????

No wonders we dont get new members posting very often on this board. It is all about the same old , same old members. Day in day out, night in, night out.

This board is virtually at a GROUND HOG situation. Lol
