I remember the nursery I went to used to have the old fashioned 3 wheeler bikes....you could guarantee no scraped knees when you rode them LOL

There was a hand made dolls shop in the Harrow rd, Paddington, London
That made dolls that could walk and talk in the 50s

Always hankered for one but never made it through the door

Actually now I think about it not sure about the talking part



But they certainly walked :-)

One two buckle my shoe
Three four knock at the door

And doing the actions while playing two or three balls against a wall

I often wonder if anyone is making a record of these somewhere because they were a part of our childhood

I remember doing cave paintings in France: but that was in the good old days when the Channel wasn't there and you could walk to France.

And I can still remember my parents buying me a Woolly Mammoth as a pet. It only cost them four shiny stones :-D

There was a small brook near where I lived as a child where me and my siblings used to go fishing for newts and tadpoles much to the delight of our mother LOL

Did much the same with my cousins in Herts - that was where I learned to ride a bike without falling off

Haven't got a clue what my poor aunt did with all the tadpoles (probably cycled back with them when we had gone to bed)

Many games were no-cost or low-cost when I was young, - skipping or 2 ball being firm favourites.
One of my best presents was a home-made shop. It was a wooden box about the size of 2 large shoe boxes. The front flap came down to form a counter and the small narrow top lifted up to reveal a shelf, where small jars of sweets were placed, - about the size of present-day spice jars.
With our weighing scales and cash register my sister and I had endless fun.

When I was a few years older I had a friend who had a toy that nobody else had in my circle of friends. It was a Viewmaster.
What a thrill when I was given one as a Christmas present when I was about 10. I loved gradually collecting reels of pictures, particularly of places overseas. Nobody I knew went abroad on holidays, so this was the next best thing.
I still have my brown Bakelite Viewmaster and all the reels.

The first toy I remember getting was the buck-a-roo one.

OH,! MY WORD!!!!

What fun we had !! you name it i did it whether for boys or girls!!
skipping. hoola hoop. jacks , spin tops , hop scotch, rounders ,tennis , net ball ,
football( my grandaughter does footie now and rugby) we used to have sports day where we lived, we lived in a green , (its a circle of houses with a green in the centre) we used to have races around the green. played against other greens. fab memories.
Boys used to do tin can ally. conkers , marbles , cricket . when the snow came we would build walls at both ends of the green and play snow fights.
Or go sledging over the fields . oh , so many more!!

Alas i did only have one 2 exspensive toys bought me a 3 wheeled tricicle and a pram, but i was grateful for anything bought me back then including
paper cut out dolls and clothes was my first doll. second doll was bare and my sister knitted her clothes, mixed board .games.ect but i did cherish a bible they bought me one christmas because a sunday school was just built and it was our first visit that year.

Bring it all back i say boys and girls played together without intimidation and it was great.

Some one mentioned Tadpoles!! i think we had those in the out side water tank ( cought the water from the roof it went down a pipe to water tank) my brothers used to go fishing for tadpoles and put them in the tank and one day frogs came jumping out all over the place. ha, ha, i can still see my mothers face !!

Yes Mersey used to play Jacks for hours, same as I now spend on the computer.

And of course like someone else mentioned my blue Teddy Bear which is now 65 yrs old. and a bit frayed round the edges like me.

Remember the day my mother bought it for me in Hamleys, I cried all the way home on the bus, mother could not understand why, the reason because it was wrapped in brown paper and string and I could not see it lol :-(

You are quite right !! Michelle , but it was a picture ha, ha.

that was not the only thing they did.wrong one of many ,like the tackle they go fishing with usually after sorting it out went under the stairs,
same place my mother kept her sweeper as she called it back then,
one pertictular time she went to use it only to be confronted by yes !! you have probably guessed by now FLIES!!!
That was not so funny! so banned the fishing tackle to the shed. :-|

I loved my dolls house that my Dad made, and the china tea set that my Mum queued up for hours for (about 1944) with the little table and chair my Dad made to set it all out on and the little dresser to keep it on. I also loved my dolls pram and cot with drop down side (also made by my Dad.) I had a 3 wheeled trike but it had solid wheels and because the pavement slabs were all up and down due a to a bomb that fell locally it was not a very comfortable ride. (I didn't have my first bike until I was 13.)

But I would also play for hours with paper dolls and their clothes, magic painting books, five stones (jacks), two balls, skipping; we'd have a long rope across the road and all the children who lived there would skip together with a couple of Mums turning the rope. (Hardly any cars then). French cricket, also played in the road, grandmother's footsteps.

We's all go to the nearby fields and make dens, take picnics and stay there for hours, go across to the duck pond at the farm and fish for tadpoles and newts.

If it was sunny my Dad would make a huge tent in the garden using his step ladder and some poles, we'd play in there for hours with our dolls.

I honestly don't remember being bored. At 5pm we'd all go home and indoors to listen to children's hour.
