WHO DUG THIS UP

RolloTheRed

RolloTheRed Report 9 May 2015 22:37

As I have posted before ...

never have subs to stuff such PayPal, amazon, FH web sites etc etc linked to yr main bank account debit card OR your usual credit card.

Instead get one of the money cards which are generally used to take abroad rather than cash. You can top these up from yr bank account but any drawings on the card eg FH trials subs. are limited to whatever is on the card and yr household finances cannot be upset. Any "free" trial blocking a sum on yr account would become obvious right away.

The blocking practice itself is quite legal but must be clearly disclosed during the set up of the transaction. It is most often encountered with car rental when a sum for accidental damage is often blocked on the account and unblocked when the car is returned without dents. All arts of the package tour industry use it too and people not running much of a current ac surplus can have a nasty shock.

I'm sure Dizzi's not going to complain about (what I've taken as an informal and friendly remark) that was made over 3 years ago.
Those words were hardly a hanging offence, so why try to get someone into trouble?

I would have been so steamed if a bank clerk said "that's a naughty thing to do" how condescending and unprofessional. I would have asked to speak to management. I have a good balance on account with my bank and I would I would have requested a reprimand be made to a bank teller lack of seriousness towards my concern. That response was frivolous and to me insulting. She showed a total lack of regard. As to the company,I never fall for those give us your credit card number. In advance because if the company was showing good faith, why do they need your credit card. If they believe in their product, they will allow you to try their product and then charge you after the trial.i only know this to have happened once online and not a genealogy company. It's too bad that a lot of genealogy companies act in a sleazy manner and give our hobby a bad rap. I know I have several subscriptions and try hard to help others out with info that cannot pay for subscriptions. When I first started out ,broke and working online looking for family,so many generous people helped me and I found many generous people online. I own a few surname groups and once a website. I do find most amateur genealogists a great group of people.

THEY ALSO CAN TAKE UP TO

2 MONTHS TO GET YOUR MONEY RELEASED

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 3 Feb 2015 00:49

It now seems to be standard practice with all "free" trials ............... they want to be sure that they get your money

In addition you have to be sure that you cancel well before the end of the trial if you decide not to continue ........................

don't leave it until the day of the end or even the day before ................... they will take the money out at midnight (or 12:01 am), and saying you sent an email has no effect.

Always send your cancellation email about 4 days before the end of the trial!

That's disgusting , Dizzi- I hope that everything works out all right for you.
Your bank and The Genealogist have no right to do that.Thank you for letting us know.

Margot.

I don,t think that is Legal. If so, that means that the bank can hold on to your money in case you decide at some point to make a purchase from some one online, :-S Are they Mind readers? It also Questions the 14day cooling off period. I,d have a strong word with the bank if I were you,Very Strong.Take care, **M**

It´s not Santander by any chance is it.?
Sounds like a Spanish banking practice.
My OH has his pension paid into his account monthly & has a standing order to pay part of it into the housekeeping account.
His credit card payment goes out the following day, but if there won´t be enough left to pay it, the money doesn´t go to the housekeeping.
Result......disaster.

Dizzi, You need to hold your bank to account,

Just because in their mind,

you had a payment going out of your account on the 2nd and their was only funds in your account to meet that request should not stop you from drawing money out now,

eg, you have your mortgage payment going out on the 2nd of the month and your mortgage is £1000 per month, so on that basis the bank needs to make your mortgage payment every month,

does that mean that you have to have a minimum of £1000 in your account at any time,

NO it does not, and how does your bank no that you are not going to make a deposit into your account on the 1st of the month to cover the £109

The trouble with banks is that they think YOUR money is THEIR money

JUST HAD EMAIL AND I PHONE THEM
THIS IS STANDARD PRACTICE
As you can see here, you are informed that a Pre-authorisation reserves the price of the subscription from your account

Annina Report 30 Apr 2012 13:01

I would also advise people with Ancestry to keep a wary eye on any emails they send.

Last month they took a full years premium payment out of my bank all at once.

This despite the fact that I always payed monthly before, and didn't bother with worldwide membership,b***y shock to have £150 taken out when you are on a tight budget, my OH went ballistic. :-S :-S :-S

Free Trial? false advertising for a start

Thanks for the warning Dizzi

Hope you get this sorted <3

Porkie_Pie Report 30 Apr 2012 12:45

They cannot reserve your money,

what they have done is present the purchase details to your bank so that on the day that your free trial runs out the bank will make the payment without delay,

Hi Dizzi, sorry they've done that to you...it's good of you to warn everyone though :-)

btw thanks also for the message re Fishlocks on FB, I don't remember to look on my page often lol. They are not mine unfortunately..there are a huge number of Fishlocks in Wilts' but if there is a connection with mine it must be back in the 17th century or so.
