That must be an absolutely fascinating job Sharron! Is that to take a snapshot of what music is being played and where?

Each venue pays a licence fee for the right to have music played. This is what is used to pay the royalties.

How they worked out how much of what was being played before I don't know but about ten years ago now,they commissioned a market research company,whose very existence is for the collection of data,to sample the performances for them.

Now,you may argue that there is not a collector at every performance but sample collecting was explained to me as being like a cherry pie.By eating one slice you now,more or less,what the rest of the pie is likely to be like.

Or,when you go to the doctor for a blood test,unless you are very unlucky,he doesn't pump the lot out!

Also,I spent many year sitting in pubs specifically to train for the job,hem,hem,cough.

I am very familiar with PRS in that I worked as a DJ and music promoter (many many moons ago)

I have boxes and boxes of UNPLAYED , MINT condition 78s Big Band music from the late 40s early 50s.
Frank Sinatra, stuff from over 3 decades.
Dad bought up the whole stock from a record store that was closing in our town in the early 1950s plus all his other collection of the past 60 years..including Glen miller

Kim, how surprising that nobody want all those records. I always thought that there were still collectors around. How sad, I bet there is some great music there too.

Brenda, I envy you being able to play classical and Jazz, although I am sure it was hard work to get there, but what memories ou have, and how kind to be taking those two on their trips to hear Jazz again.

Think you mentioned about your record collection before Neubie.
If you lived within driving distance to me I may have someone who would buy.The blind chap I take to the jazz club is a trombonist and played in a big band in Manchester years ago.He is at the moment collecting instruments and having them repaired.
His only recreation is listening to the radio or his records...so he loves being taken out once a week.
He would be in 7th heaven.

They weigh a ton which makes them hard to transport ..AnnCardiff , thats why I can,t transport them to market traders who might be interested.
I want them to go for free to someone who is really interested in the music and will look after them.

music, in my opinion, is the greatest medium and the most powerful of art forms. It can evoke memories, good or bad, remind one of a loved one, bring back age old memories, make you smile, cry, giggle, think.
It knows of no cultural or physical boundaries.
It never drives people apart.
It can remind you of bad times.
It can remind you of good times.

Errol,you can have the music machine....I cringe when people sing out of tune!.....one reason I can't watch talent shows!

hahaha yes Shane I was singing that yesterday couldn't get it off my tongue end lol .... that record came out the year I was married and has fond memories for me.....often think i'm just a bundle 'o memories :-S ;-)
