Sorry to read this Shirley, I do hope your brother gets an appointment soon and more can be done to help him. Let's hope he won't be in pain and can have some quality of life left with you all, poor chap.

My thoughts are with you too as you worry about him going through this.

Sorry to hear the news about your brother Shirley.

I hope that he is well looked after by the medical crew, and that any pain he may get will be taken ccare of.

I know that cancer of the pancreas can't be cured, but I hope that the time he has left is a good time, for him and all the family.

Thoughts are with you all <3 <3 <3

Brother Alan had been referred to Guys Hospital London yesterday and on reviewing his condition they are going to give him 18 weeks chemo starting early Jan
They did find he had three spots on his liver too . Not sure about the pancreas but maybe this will be zapped too.
Its a bit of a puzzle because the info given on that type of cancer says there is no treatment for it but Guys must feel they can help which is wonderful

He is feeling very positive which is a big step .

Hope the treatment helps your brother to have more time with you, Shirley, and will make him feel a bit more positive. Is there anyone who goes with him to make sure he understands what's wrong etc as he seems to have got muddled before? Must be very worrying and confusing but I am sure Guy's wouldn't put him through chemo if it wasn't likely to help the situation.

Have been thinking about him and you too, you have a lot to cope with so take care of yourself

Thank you everyone for your kind words . havent been around much today as its weekly shop and I had the dentist too this afternoon so only just got back online

Hi Liz

Yes he has a lovely wife who is there for him . He lives in SE London but we live in the Medway area of Kent so not close enough for quick visits especially with OH problems.

All info I have read on pancreatic cancer says its usually diagnosed too late for any effective treatment as it does its growing in its initial stages without the person being aware something is going on . But his wife did text me last week to say it had been confirmed .

The hospital though must be thinking they can help, as you say they wouldnt put him through chemo if they didnt think it may help.

It tricky though talking to both of them I have to take my cues from what they say .

I can imagine, Shirley. I am glad your brother has his lovely wife to support him and help remember all the info that comes at him - often so much to take in that it's easy to forget or get muddled.

Positive thoughts to your brother and all the family

Alan had more scans from the 30th Dec and more tests and had the first of 18 weekly chemos on Thursday .

Not feeling that grand today from the chemo kicking in but the McMillan nurse is still coming in daily to give him morphine injections for his pain.

He is retired so only has his OAP pension, his wife is some years younger but was made redundant in Oct and not working still as Alan needs her at home. The McMillan nurse is guiding them on what benefits they may be entitled too plus has arranged for him to be picked up to go for his weekly chemos as the cost of transport for them is out of their reach .

They live in a council flat in SE London with quite a high rent so their current incomes are very tight to cover their costs living. You dont need money worries on top of everything else .

Both of them have worked all their working lives and have never been spongers .

Fly Report 11 Jan 2014 16:40

Hi Shirley It's not a case of being spongers benefits are there to help ease the stress. Even if it's only Attendance Allowance and Alan's wife gets Carer's it all helps. Hope McMillan nurses can get the help needed. (excuse the spelling )

Shirley they are not being spongers, they have both worked and paid taxes etc.

Now they need help and I hope they will be told of all they are entitled to. Council Rent should come down if neither are working.

Sending positive thoughts to Alan and his family. As you say the hospital would not treat him if they thought that there was no hope.

i Shirley,

It's good that the MacMillan nurses are helping your brother and his wife with financial and transport problems as well as the treatment he is getting. I do hope the treatment buys him more time with you all and eases his pain too.

Have been thinking about him
