Easier said than done Sharron. One of my daughters is keen to try make a jam roly-poly, I will wait until she has tried, and hopefully succeeded.I don't trust cooking puddings. When I first came to Holland, suet was not available...had to go to a butcher to ask for it...he found it very strange that someone wanted this. It was called 'niervet'= kidney fat..hmm. Didn't know what to do with the lump of 'fat'..lol I gave up after this, and bought suet in the UK when I went over...still didn't make any puddings though.

At the school I went to, they cooked excellent meals, but, being a fussy eater, I didn't like much of it.We had to eat everything put on our plates though. There were two things I loved, one being spotted dick and the other jam rolo-poly...absolutely delicious.It was served with custard.Only tasted bread and butter pudding in 2006 for the first time....loved it.Trouble is, we can't get those puddings over here in Holland.

I would probably have drunk it when I was nine but was quite disappointed to find I didn't like it any more a few years ago.

Dream Topping now that is a different matter but you never seem to see it much now and when you do it's a days work to get it whipped up.

I love evaporated milk.. At 9 years old I was so upset that my sister was getting married (i was the bridesmaid) that they gave me a glass of evap milk as compensation as she left for her honeymoon.

I am addicted to custard.

When I was van driving, one place I worked would make me do a delivery early either to Petworth where there was bakery that did excellent doughnuts, it's a Chinese restaurant now, or to Havant where Heidi's did, and I believe, still do, wondrous custard slices.

Then we could have them with the coffee.

I would gladly have swapped my cakey bit for somebody elses custard!

We used to have Carnation milk. Come to think of it, I used to think it had some sort of 'royal' connection.
Now I'm a wee bit older, I realise the word carnation is similar to coronation - and the carnation flower looked a bit like a Tudor rose. :-S

We used to have Ideal milk on everything and I loved it then.

Think it is horrible now and the same goes for tinned tomato soup. No, I never did have that on me afters!

Have to admit, we used to have evaporated milk with bread pudding.
That's bread pudding - not bread & butter pudding, which, unless it was a total disaster we ate 'au naturelle' - but if it was too dry - evap milk was used.

Used to love my Mums steamed puddings, jam rolypoly, and one with bacon. I actually did like bread and milk too Shirley (I was a war baby too). I also liked baked suet puddings and have made those myself. baked in the oven and eaten l;ike yorkshire pudding with lamb. Oh I like cream, custard or ice cream with bread and butter pudding. (peasant!)

Custard of course.

It would be an unnatural act to eat jam roly-poly with cream.

It would be akin to the totally abhorrent act of some pubs who serve bread and butter pudding with custard or cream.

Bread and butter pudding must be served and savoured totally naked, not always totally acceptable in some pubs I know, but it must be unadorned.

You wouldn't tip gravy over caviar!
