I have Open Office 4.0.1 (the latest update). I don't have any very complicated uses for a word processor and I'm very happy with it. I have it because I bought a pre-used computer which had to have Word deleted with the previous owner's personal files - I didn't need Excel - and our computer adviser suggested l used Open Office for free. It did take a bit of getting used to - and as I am sure I'm not making the most of it I tried to buy "Open Office for Dummies" but Amazon quoted something like £75 so I didn't!

If you are giving up Microsoft Word you will lose any personal files you have there - you can access them through a programme called Microsoft Word Viewer -you can read them but not add to or edit them - I had to copy and paste various documents like Christmas card lists, direct debit lists, etc. to the Open Office files.

We have had Open Office for years and find it very good. We downloaded it originally so that we could read things in HTML.

I have also found that the Help section is excellent. It is one of the few programmes where we haven't gone looking for a Dummies book!!
