Of course, everything went up in price when they got rid of the half pence.

Bob - you forgot the shilling - a 'Bob' and sixpence - a 'Tanner', and Thruppence - 'Half a Tanner'.

I don't like it when people say P instead of pence, after all we didn't used to say D did we.
And the pre decimal coins had nick / pet names, the " new " currency doesn't which I think is a sign that no one wanted or liked it.

I think Maggie that often people didn't associate 1p being worth 2.4 old pence

or nearly tuppence ha'penny
as in the double bounty bar which WAS 9 pence but became 4p

which equates to nearly 10 pence

The old currency divided so well.

A pound was,

10 x 2/-
8x 2/6
5x 4/-
3 x 6/8
6 x 3/4
2 x 10/-
4 x 5/-

The new one (tiny coin) was always called a HALF penny, wasn't it. Old one was a ha'penny, and is almost exactly size and texture of a 2p piece.

How money has changed in a few years. When I was a boy, I used to get a shiny penny as one of my Christmas presents. Sometimes a rich relation would give you a shiny tanner. Nowadays, I empty my pockets every night of anything less than 20p and throw them in an "emergency use only" drawer - copper coins are just a pain.

Also remember my grandma having a mite in her purse. A tiny and very thin real silver coin (much smaller than a silver 3d), it was worth half a farthing (1/8d). And she also had a groat (large coin worth 4d) and a half groat (2d). Was there ever a coin for 18d (1/6d)? Reason for asking is I am sure I have read in a Welsh language novel somebody having a pisyn deunaw (18d coin) :-S

ZZzzz. I also hate p. Before decimalisation everybody used the correct word "denaria". As in "how many sweeties can I have for the six denaria in my hand, dear shoppekeeper?

Those were the days - you could buy a pig for a guinea (21 shillings).

remember the white five pound notes? shopkeepers used to ask you to put your name and address on them if you were lucky enough to have one - how stupid was that

I also recall having a crown in my change back in the fifties

My Dad made me a bracelet out of silver sixpenny pieces

Decimalisation was one big con - everything got rounded up :-(

The only decimal coin I can think of that got a "nickname" was the ½ p.
It was widely known (I believe) as "The Tiddler"... :-D
Well it was around Notts anyways cannot vouch for other places.

I have a two pound coin from 1986 (somewhere) I hung on to it because there wasn't many about. Then they disappeared for a few years. They weren't the same as the later ones.

I also have a stash of metric half p's. When we first went metric some people would say eg 'ten new pence'. I was glad when 'new' was dropped :-D

Just had a look at my money collection, have a few assorted old coins including 4 1/2p....2x £2 from 1986 and 2x£5 coin from 1996 &1998....don't know where I got the fivers from unless someone paid me with them when I had a pub?

I got an interest in money from working as a bank cashier and have a large collection of bank notes unfortunately no white fiver but I do have a blue £1 and a purple 10/- from the war years

My mum collected coins mainly because she found out about the silver content in pre 1940s and sold loads....helped by dad who was also a bank cashier when decimalisation came about, so he would sort through all the coins paid in and swapped them with his own money :-D

I too remember farthings with the wren! I have tried to explain to my grandchildren aged 14 - 11 and 7, all about £ s d, but they just fix me with blank looks. Not only £.s.d, but all the other imperial measurements that were the bane of my young life!!!!

Wonder how many know that the 10p coin is not its original size anymore?
I`ve still got a few of the old ones.
(same size as the old florin 2/- piece)

jax

jax Report 6 Feb 2014 20:47

The 5p used to be the same size as the shilling as well

Remember Honolulu pennies.? Some Victorian pennies Britannia had the spear thing on her knee and on other ones she had the spear Honolulu. You think I jest? Nope.

Budgie Rustler

Budgie Rustler Report 7 Feb 2014 10:08

Had to smile at that one Janet.
You are right of course. The position of Britannia's trident was changed and on the "on her lulu" coin there was sea with a lighthouse and a sailing ship in the back ground, they got dropped as well (1860s a young Victoria on the flip side).
Just checked on some of mine, :-D

Magpie Report 7 Feb 2014 10:20

I have one or two 'bun' sixpences, older Victoria ones, George Vth and
V1th. They were put into the Christmas pudding donkeys years ago. Not any more as no one now likes Xmas pud (except me!) so they languish in the tin that they were always kept in.
