Does anyone have experience of them?

My SIL was with Orange but it was changed over to EE. She has an old PC with XP installed & dial up connection that is very slow and drops out

She decided after talking around the family to buy a new laptop that she got two days ago from PC world. They gave her a half hour lesson on its use cos its windows 8 and she only had XP on her old tower PC.

Well she cant get the wireless connection to work. as soon as she plugs in the new Wireless connection her phone goes dead and she hasnt any internert connection.

Phone calls tp the EE help desk is useless cos its in India and they only want to go through a checklist with her answering Yes or NO/

Like me she is in her seventies with NO computer savvy . she lives on her own having just lost her hubby so is getting very frustrated at not being able to know how to sort it

I have suggested as she has Sky TV maybe changing over to their broadband as they have engineers who come out to set things up for her.

Any advice would be welcome

Does she not have access to a 14 year old?

Sounds like she has not connected the router correctly

I have used the same provider for years it started as freeserve changed hand several time and is now orange (EE) and never had a problem, but i have changed in the last 6 months and i'm now with sky for everything phone, TV and internet

If you Google EE there are lots of local branches. If there is one near your SIL they should be able to help.

No she lives on her own !!

she is getting very frustrated as rang them several times yesterday and got sent around in circles and they rang off in mid call twice.

She got sent a wireless modem but taking out the cable from the back of the old modem and putting it into the new one doesnt work

She has no idea why not and the helpline is crap !! they simply want her to answer from their crib sheet yes or No But she has no idea what they are talking about ,

Cant see a UK based helpline she can ring

The basic setup is, The wireless Router should plug into the 13amp wall socket for power then their should be a filter that plugs into the wall phone socket, then the phone and router plugs into the filter, the only difference is when you have "intranet" which is what the thicker yellow cable is for and is normaly discarded

switch on and follow the instructions for connecting the PC to the router and ISP

When she plugs the new wireless modem in she no longer has her telephone , its dead. Even if she plugs in at the main telephone point

having changed providers a couple of times, I feel that I have been misled, because it seems that if you have a slow BT line, no matter what the providers say.....our router is quicker than your old one....
.it will STILL be slow........Quicker than dial-up but.............

Shirley, Did she leave her old dail up connected? without seeing what has or has not been done its difficult to say how to put it right unless the person recieving the instruction has some basic knowledge

I think your SIL needs to get someone in,

Bob, All broadband speeds are limited by the land line speed, telephone exchange and distance to your house, living near the exchange is no guarantee it will be fast because its the route that the line takes that counts not the distance as the crow flies, the number of people using broadband supplied from the same exchange also slows your speed down,
