First year we have noticed this and I assume it is down to the wet/damp weather. Our PVC windows (2 years old) have got a lot of mould along the join to the window sill. We have got most of it off with mould remover but it is hard work.

Anyone found a way of reducing or preventing this?

Ann - I fight a constant battle with mould :-( We live in the sub-tropics, so in summer when It's hot & humid it's even worse.

I have been told bleach just gets rid of the colour, but doesn't kill off the mould.

I use clove oil. Not sure where you will find it, but I can get it in a pharmacy/chemist or a health food store. Fill a spray bottle with water & add up to 6 drops of the oil; spray it liberally & leave it. It smells much better than bleach :-D, reminds me of when my granny made apple pies.

I use this mixture in the shower, on shoes & handbags, just about everything.

Thanks both, will look out for that LScozz. It is the kitchen Hayley mainle but all rooms have it to some extent. Yes I will ask him when we get him to call, he is very good and is no cowboy. It is not round the glass but where the frame meets the sill.

Have to tried "White Vinigar" Ann?

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 23 Feb 2014 14:05

Tried it upstairs, it moves some like the mould spray but not all Merlin.

be careful with "mould spray", the chemicals in them can strip paint.

I like the clove oil, because it's natural & doesn't stink!

I use it on leather, with no problems.

here's a thought........... have you tried baby wipes?

We had new back bedroom windows put in in 2008. At that time the installers recommended vents being put in the top plastic frame . This lets in fresh air when wanted but can be switched off if needed.

This has worked fine on those windows and others since installed . means you can ventilate the room but still be secure .

I normally keep the verticals closed on the second bedroom as we get full sun on that side of the house for most of the day. means the blue carpet and Austrian blind dont get sun bleached.

Had grandson here this week so the room was used. decided to open the blind so the vents could do their job ,was surprised to see one glass panel was misted up and running with condensation . ,thought at first was on the outside but then realised no cos the other parts of the window are OK

Seems the seal has failed on that window. BUT we have a 10 year warranty so its will get replaced

No, not tried baby wipes LS, something else to try.

I have to admit that there is probably no ventilation as we don't open the windows in the cold weather to keep the heating in. Have to think about that, thanks Shirley (and Hayley) for that.

once you kill the spores off and removed them, it may take 2/3 goes with white vinegar, its a natural product and harmless and an old toothbrush ........... wipe round seal with car polish or a clear shoes polish, the moisture should run off onto the sill which can be mopped up,,,,,,open the window while cooking.....

Hello Ann

This stuff is amazing and can be found for less than a £ in B&M, Home Bargains and other cheap stores

Astonish oven and cookware cleaner

It's not abrasive but works like it is! No scrubbing, just a gentle wipe and it's gone

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 23 Feb 2014 15:09

Gins but does it say it can be used on PVC. Would it take the shine off?

Gee

Gee Report 23 Feb 2014 15:18

Hi Ann

No, it does not take the shine off. 'It will' show you how white your window frames should be!

I use it on the ceramic hob too.......along with the stainless steel fittings in the kitchen

It's a dream

another thing I do.........

In the wardrobes, especially where my shoes are stored, I keep containers of kitty litter...... it helps absorb moisture. I got fed up taking shoes out of the wardrobe & having to clean off all the blue & green to see what was underneath!

Most of the time I live in sandals, but we have a couple of months a year when it gets cooler and have to wear shoes & socks :-D

Weather forecast for tomorrow............ 27C & raining :-( ... explains why things go mouldy :-0
