I do not know what all the fuss is about

Strict Jewish families will have 2 sinks 2 cupboards etc. so as to prepare their kosher and non-kosher foods.

These food stores are more than big enough to be able to do the same.

And I think many of us on here would be more than just a little surprised to know just how much of the meat we buy in supermakets is already halal.

And much of the everyday food we eat is also Halal or Kosher. No by design but it just is.

:-D

Is it not possible that Subway can use a separate section for Halal products and another for non Halal food, it works in Supermarkets. :-S :-S :-S

Guinevere - I enjoy being 'daft' occasionally.

Old age has given me a thick skin & I'm a bit deaf too plus my mind wanders.

Guinevere

Guinevere Report 1 May 2014 09:30

Of course animals have no rights. They can't vote either. Humans should be kind to animals but it's daft to talk about animals having rights. They just don't.

Dermot

Dermot Report 1 May 2014 08:46

Animals everywhere have little or no rights.

The notion of what is 'right' has dogged moral debate for centuries.

The main objection from the Muslim community is not that the meat is not bled properly ,but that pork [ham ] is a banned [unclean ] meat and it's presence in any food store contaminates all the food in said outlet .
if it will keep the Muslim community happy ,why not let it go ,plenty of other meats they are happy with ,and either Jewish christians ,and other ethnic groups can also ,take their bussiness elsewhere, and,as Errol says ,it's a bit of give and take from everyone.Fred. :-)

Subway state that all their halal meat is from animals that are stunned first.

Guinevere

Guinevere Report 1 May 2014 07:00

"Food Standards Agency figures in 2012, the first since 2003, show that more than 80% of animals are stunned before slaughter for Halal meat in the UK."

From a Parliamentary report.

I watched a recent Countryfile programme recently and, from that, I gather that the percentage is higher than 80% in the UK now.

Subway - yuk - horrible, pappy, tasteless rolls and plastic fillings :-(

GlitterBaby

GlitterBaby Report 30 Apr 2014 23:10

Not much of a fan of Subway.

Did not like it when they took the tomato sauce of the meatballs to put on chicken.

So not a place I am planning to visit in the future.

No, Mildred, traditional Halah does not allow pre-stunning:

'Traditionally halal butchers cut the throats of animals while they are fully conscious. Some halal butchers now practice pre-stunning but this is not permitted by some Islamic scholars.'

I am not at all raciest in any way but I agree with Dizzi wholeheartedly. Errolsheep, you say if we don't like it go elsewhere but why not say that to the people who complained in the first place. If you don't like what a certain place serves go elsewhere. :-P

I see there being no problem with those stores offering Halal food as the animals are stunned before being killed. There are plenty enough stores still selling the normal menu.

It makes sense for the business to supply where demand is.

From what I've read, most of the meat we eat is Halal anyway.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1315278/Top-supermarkets-secretly-sell-halal-Sainsburys-Tesco-Waitrose-M-S-dont-tell-meat-ritually-slaughtered.html

Admittedly, it's the Daily Fail, but other newspapers commented on it.

Personally, I don't eat fast food, and prefer to get my meat from a farm shop.

but it is /seems to be the fact that Ham is NOT now going to be sold in these stores

was the sale of Ham THAT was the objection?

eRRolSheep

eRRolSheep Report 30 Apr 2014 20:23

Too right - I get very cross with some people and their racist narrow minded comments.

People are people, humans, no matter what their colour, creed, nationality, religious beliefs, and I cannot believe that people would take such exception to this. Bigotry springs to mind.

ZZzzz

ZZzzz Report 30 Apr 2014 20:14

The Muslims is who "they" are and some of those that I know disagree with what subway are doing anyway.

I shall remove the offending post I put up, I don't set out to upset anyone.

I do believe that in the thirties certain groups were forced to eat elsewhere because their beliefs did not fit in with the German regime as it was.
