Having worked for MR companies in the past it is feasible for cash to be offered ..this offsets the cost of travel etc ...Yes you sign but only to say that you have attended and received.
Possibly naughty of GR not to contact 1st but they are paying a company to do this work and these companies want an overall of age etc. So I can understand why the contact has come straight from the MR company. The MR company can only select from what they have been given they can´t divulge any other data that they have been given.
I would go put my views across and collect my 50 quid ..not that I will be asked as it would cost me more than that to get there :-D

I'm surprised they are giving actual cash. I presume you will have to sign for it In some way as they will want to use these payments as expenses against tax.

It is common practice to have market research companies use existing customers and not in contravention of any data protection laws any more than the accounts department knowing your name because they never own the information. The market research company is effectively acting as an auxiliary department of the company.

The market research company will have chosen those to be offered the opportunity to share their opinion probably from the entire client base with no bias on the part of GR.

Gr will never know that you have taken part in the research unless you are specifically asked for your information to be passed to them for the purposes of further research.

You will be asked for your details after the group discussion. This is purely for the purpose of back checking on the people running the group and the information will never leave the research company. This is a very strict rule of the Market Research Society without which the industry would collapse and everybody would suffer.

The fifty pound reward would have been included in the price of the contract for which the market research company tendered.

Had you not chosen to divulge publicly the fact that you were offered nobody would have known

I am amazed that GR would give anyone £50

not nice of GR to pass a member's email address on (without contacting the member FIRST), even if it is a company that is doing research for them.

I'm not impressed.

".........do not distribute, make copies or disclose the content to others."

Ooops!

Even though Droy Fieldwork Research seems to be a bona fide company, it would have been better if GR had asked your permission before they contacted you. Despite scan-reading the T&C, there doesn't seem to be any clause where it says GR can pass on your contact details even if the third party is working on their behalf.

I have just looked on their website. They are MRS and look pukka to me.

You go and give your valued opinions and get your £50.

Thank you; I have found the link and sent the e-mail to the Community Manager. There was a company name associated with the e-mail which I omitted to include on my original post - here it is.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.

I look forward to hearing from you shortly

Best Regards

Louise

Ifi it is genuine MR it will give you the name of the company commissioned to carry out the research which does sound like a bona fide group discussion to me.

If you have any doubts about the company you can check with the Market Research Society.

Fifty pounds sounds about right for the sum they would recompense you as well.

I have just received an e-mail from a market research company saying they are acting on behalf of GR; it reads as follows,

" We are contacting you on behalf of Genes Reunited and have been commissioned by them to carry out some market research amongst their members.

The research will take the form an informal group discussion with around 7 other customers like yourself present. The aim being to gain feedback in order for them to improve their service and website. During the session you will be asked a series of questions about your experience of researching your family history in general and the Genes Reunited website in particular.

The discussion will take place in Birmingham city centre at 12.30pm on Tuesday 13th May and last for a maximum of 90 minutes.

As a thank you for your time and opinions we will be happy to hand you £50 cash on the day.

Let me take this opportunity to reassure you that research such as this is not associated with selling and everything that you say will remain completely confidential. No names will be passed on to any third parties. We are purely interested in your views and opinions, not your personal details.

Does anyone know if this is genuine?
