ElizabethK - Microsoft announced that they would release a patch for the Heartbleed "bug" so it is quite likely that.
You should be able to check what it is suggesting you download.

Sidenote for anyone thinking of upgrading from XP to W8 - if you are running a machine with XP, which suggests it is pretty ancient, in all likelihood you will struggle to run W8 at best

I am on XP and still getting updates

I download them if appropriate as not all apply to to XP

You will not (in all probability) get XP updates. Microsoft has ceased to issue them (apart from as mentioned above).
You have probably ticked the box for "other updates" which could apply to things like Office, third party software etc etc

Thanks for your replies-I wish they would make their minds up !!

Yes,the time is coming for a change

XP support has ended.
This update regarding Heartbleed was a one-off because it was so serious but think of it like a car - how long would you expect Ford to keep offering support for a 1987 Sierra?

AnnCardiff Report 14 May 2014 17:15

my computer is two years old, just under actually, and the guy who built it for me is coming to do the upgrade

glad it gives you a laugh

eRRolSheep

eRRolSheep Report 14 May 2014 17:26

It does!

Why would someone push an obsolete operating system?

eRRolSheep

eRRolSheep Report 14 May 2014 17:32

I am merely stating facts - XP licenses ceased to be sold about six years ago. After all, it was released way way back in 2001 so in computing terms is a positive dinosaur.

Maybe you would like to delete your comment about my name as I find it offensive and that is not what this thread is about - apologies to ElizabethK

eRRolSheep

eRRolSheep Report 14 May 2014 17:37

What on earth is offensive and nasty - I have reread this thread and see nothing of the sort!

AnnCardiff

AnnCardiff Report 14 May 2014 17:39

that you had a laugh out of my posting - that's what

eRRolSheep

eRRolSheep Report 14 May 2014 17:42

I laughed at a perceived scenario - people often do on here.

AnnCardiff

AnnCardiff Report 14 May 2014 17:45

well enjoy yourself - I see you've reported me - I won't bother doing the same to you even though your postings were nasty

eRRolSheep

eRRolSheep Report 14 May 2014 19:17

For starters why assume I have reported you - maybe someone else did because they thought what you said could possibly have contravened T&Cs.

Second, I see nothing wrong with what I have posted on this thread - I am trying to give advice and certainly not entering into some sort of argument.

End of!

Again, apologies to ElizabethK.

Last night, I turned off my computer before going to bed.

I went to the kitchen to get a glass of water....... walked past the study door to go to the bedroom..... and noticed the monitor was on........ showing updates for XP.

They were automatically downloaded & the computer switched itself off.

:-S

OH went to chat to our computer geek guy on Monday about our laptop

OH asked geek about XP, and his advice

Geek said he was still using XP on one of his home computers :-)

so not even geeks can agree :-)

Basically, he said that if you were still able to do what you wanted to do, then don't rush to update and change, "just because"

LadyScozz Report 15 May 2014 04:43

OK, I have an "out of date" computer. It works.

I also have an "out of date" car, kitchen, sewing machine & other appliances....... and hips :-D

Most of them work too.
